Residential Project

Making dreams become reality

Our friend Adam at Wake Architects asked for our help with a bespoke new build property he was working on in Grasscroft, near Oldham, for Mr and Mrs Ley.

It soon became evident that the design of this large and stunning house was highly contemporary.
And the Leys explained at a meeting in our offices at Mirfield that they originally envisaged green oak frames in conjunction with visible steel frames on three parts of the build.

But we doubted the look of a traditional oak frame would work in this particular design and wouldn’t provide the character they were looking for.
So instead we advised they use kiln-dried oak, both to work with the steel and as the required structural elements.

Premium quality with oak

Kiln-dried oak in this section size is very exclusive and pressure was felt to deliver the oak and steel frames to fulfil the expectations of both the architect and the client as well as justifying the extra cost.

Paragon Oak were commissioned to provide both the steelwork and the oak frames. The open apex frame to the rear and the lean-to BBQ area frame both incorporated oak fitting into the web of the powder-coated steel, with the visible feature of pig nose stainless steel fixings that we had made specially for the project.

The roof aspect of the frames was built from two-ply glulam (glued-laminated timber) kiln-dried oak beams which were manufactured in our own workshop.

THE MAIN ENTRANCE FRAME WAS A CHALLENGE AND WE PROVIDED FRIENDLY ADVICE DURING THE DESIGN STAGE TO ACHIEVE THE CUSTOMERS’ VISION. THE FRAME WAS VERY TALL AND THE SECTION SIZES OF THE KILN-DRIED FRAME WERE LARGE TO GIVE A CHUNKY STRUCTURAL FEEL.

The door was large and heavy with a complex locking system that we spent hours sourcing in order to achieve the best possible match.

But the end result is stunning and exactly what the clients envisaged, making all the hard work and pressure of converting Mr and Mrs Ley's dreams into reality so rewarding.

“We are so delighted with the work Paragon Oak did for us on our new-build home. It was a large and complicated job with various wood features within the design.
“The architect had created an impressive, lofty entrance to the house mixing wood with tall panes of glass and also two oak covered terraces. These are centre-piece features of our house and it was important that Paragon Oak got it just right so that they blended in with the contemporary design of the house.
“They certainly didn’t let us down. In fact they did a brilliant job, which visitors to our home always remark upon.

"We love looking at the detail of their work and take great pleasure in admiring the craftsmanship. What impressed us most however, was Paul and his team’s pride and enthusiasm for the task! They’re lovely, down to earth people, who have an incredible eye for detail. We couldn’t recommend them more highly.”
