Residential Project

A kitchen worth entertaining

There was just one problem with Mr and Mrs Milner’s stunning barn home conversion nestling in a picturesque West Yorkshire village – the kitchen was far too small and not in proportion to the rest of the building.

Now the Milners are people who love to entertain and wanted to develop and extend this room into the beating heart of their house.
So, because Paragon Oak had done work for them before, they turned to us for help again.

Highly-regarded architectural company, One17 Design Ltd, with whom we have a great working relationship, then set about creating a design which worked around all the complex elements involved in such old properties – window locations, floor levels and things like that.

The result was a large flat-roofed orangery with the whole of the kitchen wall removed to create a huge open aspect kitchen, breakfast room and snug.

Oak frame door and porch

The clients took on board our advice

to use air-dried oak for their structural frame in order to create a rustic look which would complement the existing original oak beams and character of the rest of such an interesting property.

Because the low roof and high garden made the roof highly visible, a high-quality roof cover was essential to complement the classy finish. So after some head-scratching, we chose zinc with hidden guttering to establish a finished result that speaks for itself.

THE CORRECT BALANCE OF MATERIALS, MASONRY, PLASTERED WALLS, OAK FRAME AND GLASS CREATED A PRACTICAL AND STUNNING FEATURE ROOM THAT HAS INDEED NOW BECOME THE HEART OF THE HOME WHERE THE FAMILY NOW SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME.

As well as the extension at the rear, the Milners also wanted a porch/boot room at the front. So we had to create a frame which not only blended in with the property but also enhanced it – a design justifying its place as the main entrance of the house.

So we built a lift-up boot box to one side and then, as the Milners wished to hang their coats in the porch, used obscure glass to that elevation. That way we could keep the design the same on all sides while at the same time preventing the clothes being visible.

“From the initial consultation through to design, build and aftersales care, we really can’t praise enough the work Paragon have done for us. The build quality and design are second to none, as is the after-sales care.
“Our first project was an oak-frame garage, then we chose Paragon for a large orangery extension, and now – which is testament to the quality of their work – the front entrance porch.

“We would genuinely never use or recommend anyone else for any oak project.”
