Oak brings life to its surroundings
The horticultural team at Leeds University asked for our help at the beginning of 2012 with a garden they wanted to enter in the Chelsea Flower Show during the Queen’s Jubilee year. The theme of the garden would be pollination.
We were given the design showing an empty corner space where they thought some form of oak frame would work with the theme. Then they also asked us to incorporate a sedum or green roof.
Honoured to be given the opportunity to design
such a project, our experts then carefully explored many options to ensure the event theme was reflected within every grain of the oak frame.
The Chelsea Flower Show team trusted us to create a tasteful feature which would combine natural ambience with practicality to ensure the frame was fully utilised throughout the day.
So we incorporated display boards giving information to visitors along with an intricate timber gutter designed to shed water down a chain into a barrel.
Then, mindful of the pollination theme, we created the sedum roof as an extra plant display area to attract ladybirds, butterflies and bees during the show.
WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE SHOW TO SET UP THE FRAME, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ANY OF THE LEEDS UNIVERSITY TEAM HAD SEEN IT. THEY WERE ECSTATIC, TO SAY THE LEAST. IT FITTED PERFECTLY WITHIN THE GARDEN, THE PROPORTIONS BEING EXACT SO THE CURVED OAK TIMBERS AND INTERNAL ROOF FEATURE REALLY STOOD OUT.
Each supplier was then awarded with a Gold Medal certificate and ours now hangs with pride of place in our main office.
Following the show, the frame was eventually displayed within the university’s garden, where we added seating and a balustrade.
It has now become a popular and well-loved feature, and the sturdy oak construction will ensure that it remains so for many years to come.
